llms.txt: What It Is, How to Create One, and Whether It's Worth It for a Local Business GEO

What is llms.txt, and do you need one?

llms.txt is a simple text file you place at the root of your website (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that lists and summarizes your most important pages in a clean, AI-readable format, so a large language model can find your key content quickly. It was proposed in late 2024 and it is genuinely easy to create, often in ten minutes or with a free plugin. The honest part most guides skip: it is a proposed standard, and as of 2026 the major AI crawlers have not confirmed they rely on it, so no one can promise it gets you cited. For a local business the sensible take is that adding one is low effort and harmless, a small bet that may pay off as adoption grows, but it is nowhere near as important as the accurate profile, reviews, and genuinely useful content that actually earn AI visibility today. Do it after the foundation, not instead of it.

llms.txt keeps showing up on GEO checklists, usually oversold as a way to get cited by AI. Here is the straight version for a local business owner: what the file actually is, how to make one, and an honest answer on whether it is worth your time right now.

What it is (and how it differs from robots.txt)

llms.txt is a plain text file, written in Markdown, that lives at the root of your site at yoursite.com/llms.txt. Its job is to give a large language model a clean, curated map of your most important content: a short description of your business and links to your key pages, so the AI does not have to wade through your whole site and its navigation, ads, and clutter to find what matters. It was proposed in late 2024 as a way to make sites easier for AI to read.

People confuse it with robots.txt, but they do opposite jobs. robots.txt tells crawlers what they are not allowed to access. llms.txt does the reverse: it points AI toward the content you most want it to read and understand. One is a fence; the other is a welcome map. Neither replaces the other, and having one says nothing about the other.

What goes in an llms.txt file

The format is deliberately simple. At minimum it is your business name as a heading, a one-line description, and a short list of your most important links with a few words on each. A local service business version might look like this:

    Key pages

    • Services: a link to your main services page, with a short description

    • Service areas: a link to your city or areas-served pages

    • About: a link to who you are and your credentials

    • Contact: a link to how to reach you

That is the core of it. You can add an optional section of secondary links, but the point is curation, not completeness: you are telling the AI what matters most, so a short, well-chosen list beats dumping your whole sitemap.

    How to create one

There are two honest paths, and neither is hard. The manual way: open a plain text editor, write the structure above with your real business description and your most important links, save it as llms.txt, and upload it to your site's root folder so it is reachable at yoursite.com/llms.txt. Ten minutes if you know your key pages. The assisted way: many SEO plugins now generate one for you (several WordPress SEO plugins have an llms.txt generator, and free online generators exist), which is fine as a starting point as long as you review what it includes and trim it to the pages that actually matter. Either way, keep it current when your important pages change, and do not overthink it.

    Who actually uses it today

It helps to know where llms.txt actually stands, because the checklists rarely say. The sites that have adopted it most are technical ones, software documentation, developer tools, and platforms whose content is read by AI coding assistants, where a clean machine-readable map of the docs genuinely helps. Adoption among ordinary local-business websites is thin, and more importantly, the major AI search engines have not publicly committed to using the file as a ranking or citation input. So the current reality is a proposed standard with real but narrow use, growing interest, and no guarantee. That is not a reason to avoid it, a ten-minute file that might help later is a reasonable bet, but it is a reason to keep it in proportion. If a tool or agency presents llms.txt as the key to AI visibility, that is a signal to be skeptical of the rest of their advice.

The honest answer: is it worth it for a local business?

Here is the part the hype skips. llms.txt is a proposed standard, not an adopted one, and as of 2026 the major AI crawlers have not confirmed that they read or rely on it. That means no one can honestly promise that adding the file will get you cited or recommended. Some tools and documentation sites use it; broad adoption by the big AI engines is unproven. So the realistic verdict for a Volusia business: adding an llms.txt file is low effort and does no harm, and it is a small, cheap bet that could pay off if adoption grows. But it is not a priority, and it is certainly not a substitute for the work that actually earns AI visibility today. The Princeton and Georgia Tech GEO research (KDD 2024) found that credible, well-sourced content is what drives AI citations, not a technical file. Spend your first hours on an accurate profile, real reviews, and genuinely useful pages. Add the llms.txt after that, as a tidy finishing touch, not as the strategy.

    DoDon't
Add one after your foundation is solid, as a low-effort finishing touchTreat it as a priority over profile, reviews, and real content
Keep it short and curated to your most important pagesDump your entire sitemap into it
Review any plugin-generated file and trim itExpect it to get you cited on its own

    Get the foundation right first

An llms.txt file is a fine finishing touch, but it is the last 1% of AI visibility, not the first 90%. We focus on the work that actually gets a local business found and cited by AI, then add the technical niceties on top. See how we approach GEO optimization, or book a free audit.
