What is GEO for a local business, and who is it for?

GEO, generative engine optimization, is the work of getting your business named and recommended when customers ask AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google's AI answers for a provider in your area. First, a clarification that trips people up: GEO in this sense is not geo-targeting, the ad practice of showing promotions based on someone's location. Same three letters, different thing. For a local business, GEO means making sure the AI tools your customers increasingly use include you in their answers. It helps most for businesses whose customers research before they buy, that compete in a crowded market, or that serve customers who have already moved to AI search, think remodelers, lawyers, dentists, med spas, and specialty services. It helps least, for now, for pure-emergency and walk-in businesses whose customers decide on the spot. The underlying work overlaps heavily with strong local SEO, so a business with a complete profile, good reviews, and clear pages is already most of the way there.

Search "GEO for local businesses" and you get three different things tangled together: generative engine optimization, geo-targeted advertising, and plain local SEO. This clears that up and answers the question the explainer pages skip, which kinds of local business GEO actually helps, and which can wait.

First, the confusion: GEO is not geo-targeting

Two different things share the abbreviation, and mixing them up leads businesses to buy the wrong thing. Geo-targeting is an advertising tactic: showing ads or offers to people based on where they physically are. Generative engine optimization, the GEO this article is about, is making your business show up in AI-generated answers. They are unrelated. If a vendor pitches you "GEO" make sure you know which one they mean, because optimizing your AI presence and running location-based ads are entirely different investments with different goals.

What GEO actually does for a local business

When a customer asks an AI tool "who's the best roofer in Ormond Beach" or "recommend a family dentist near Port Orange," the AI returns a short list of businesses it trusts. GEO is the work of being on that list. In practice it means giving the AI tools clear, credible, consistent information to draw on: an accurate and complete Google Business Profile, strong and recent reviews, pages that plainly state what you do and where, structured data that spells out your details, and mentions across the web that corroborate all of it. The AI is not doing anything mystical; it is assembling an answer from the most trustworthy, clearly-presented sources it can find. GEO makes your business one of those sources.

This is why GEO overlaps so heavily with good local SEO. The signals that help you rank in the map pack, completeness, reviews, consistency, clear pages, are largely the same signals that get you named by AI. The Princeton and Georgia Tech research on generative engine optimization (KDD 2024) found that credible, well-sourced, clearly-presented information is what drives citations in AI answers, which is the same thing that has always driven trust in search. GEO is not a separate internet. It is making your business easy to understand and trust, aimed at a new place your customers are looking.

Who GEO helps most (and least)

GEO is not equally valuable to every local business, and the honest answer depends on how your customers choose you. Here is roughly how the value breaks down by business type.

Business typeHow much GEO helps nowWhy
Remodelers, contractors, home improvementHighCustomers research and compare before a big spend
Lawyers, accountants, financial servicesHighConsidered, high-value decisions people research first
Dentists, med spas, specialty healthHighCustomers shop and compare providers carefully
Restaurants, retail, local experiencesMediumPeople increasingly ask AI for recommendations
Emergency plumbing, towing, locksmithLower for nowChosen on the spot in urgency, less research
Pure walk-in or referral-only businessesLower for nowCustomers do not search AI to choose them yet

"Lower for now" is the key phrase. None of this is permanent, and the lower-value categories will shift as AI search spreads. But today, the businesses that get the most from GEO are the ones whose customers already research and compare, because that is where AI recommendations most influence the decision. The good news for local businesses

Here is the encouraging part the hype pages bury under urgency: because GEO runs on the same signals as strong local SEO, a local business that has done the fundamentals is already most of the way to being recommendable by AI. A complete, active Google Business Profile, a steady stream of recent reviews, consistent business information across the web, and clear pages about your services and service area are the backbone of both. Google has reported that complete Business Profiles are considerably more likely to be seen as reputable by customers, and that same completeness is what helps AI tools trust and cite you. So the work is not a whole new discipline bolted on top of everything else. For most local businesses it is an extension of doing the local basics well, with a few AI-specific additions on top.
